Paradise Coast is Clear After Hurricane Irma

The Paradise Coast is Clear! Naples and Marco Island beaches are as beautiful as ever after Hurricane Irma impact the area on September 10, 2017. A very large storm surge that was predicted to come ashore along Naples and Marco Island beaches did not happen. The main Gulf Coast beach areas look beautiful and are open to visitors. The communities of Everglades City and Goodland did receive storm surge. While their recovery process has been slower, those communities are also rebounding. Resturants, fishing charters and ecotours are open and welcoming customers.

Red Tide in Southwest Florida

Red tide is the bloom of a naturally-occurring organism, Karenia brevis, that is always present in waters around Southwest Florida. When blooms occur, toxic chemicals are produced that can affect both marine organisma and humans. In high concentrations, fish can die and humans, especially those with asthma or emphysema, can suffer respiratory irritation or distress.

There is currently a bloom of red tide offshore in the Gulf extending from Sarasota southward to Lee County. Recent tests in the Naples, Marco Island and the Evergaldes area (Collier County), detected backgrpnd leveld to very low concentrations.  For the latest statewide informatio on red tide, visit the Florida Wildlife Research Institution's Red Tide website.
